5 Day Pelorus Sound Expedition

This is one of our premiere trips and is recommended for those with previous paddling experience. It is also possible to do this trip unguided but should only be carried out by those familiar with sea kayaking in remote and secluded areas.

This trip has a minimum of two persons for a guided trip. If you intend to make this a self guided trip we will be happy to offer you advice and planning information.

Due to the nature of Pelorus Sound this is a one-way trip undertaken in the direction of the prevailing wind. Pelorus Sound is next to the Queen Charlotte Sound and it's southern end is at Havelock. It is not as busy as the Queen Charlotte Sound and because it is quite large you wouldn't expect to see the entire area in just 5 days.

Day 1

Transported, by road, from our base to Duncan Bay, Tennyson Inlet - approximately 1.5 - 2 hours driving time. Paddle to Tawa Bay for the first nights campsite. A generally relaxed day and good way to get into the 'feel' of the next five days.

Day 2

Around into Pelorus Sound to arrive at Jacobs Bay campsite. This part of the trip can be quite challenging, wind and tide conditions around Tawero Point or the Tawhitinui Reach need to be considered carefully. An early start should be made as generally the wind conditions are most favorable at this time of the morning. An alternative campsite at Wilson Bay is available if you are unable to reach Jacobs Bay. You will need to ask permission of the landowner for use of the private campsite or use of his house for accomodation.

Day 3

Waking up on day three at Jacobs Bay is a rewarding experience with a great view of the sunrise and the possibility of a short walk to Fairy Bay. The days paddle will see you moving onto Nydia Bay campsite. If you arrive early enough there are also walking opportunities along the Nydia track.

Day 4

Nydia Bay to Ferndale Campsite or Putanui Point. The choice between these two options depends quite heavily on your energy levels. Both locations offer you the options of short walks and both have great campsites. Ferndale does offer some nice sandy beaches to laze on in the afternoon sun whilst Putanui Point offers secluded camping amongs Nikau Palm Trees.

Day 5

Take your time on this last day to paddle back to Ohingaroa where you will be met for a pre-arranged pick up.

Whilst out in the Pelorus Sound you will be moving through a fantastic fishing and mussel area. Make sure you take a reel so that you can go fishing or go out and collect some of the area's famous Green Mussels to complement your evening meals.
